Five Roads Forum,
West Ealing, London
Five Roads Forum
is a Residents Association covering a neighbourhood of West Ealing
comprising of; Hastings Rd, Hartington Rd, Broughton Rd, Denmark
Rd and Arden Rd.
The area is
predominantly residential with three business premises in Hastings
Road (full access will have to remain for these buildings). The
residential buildings are mixed but mainly of late Victorian origin.
The area is considered to be relatively affluent with a high number
of resident vehicles.
There are no
facilities within the area for children to play, and the nearest
open spaces involve crossing the busy Uxbridge Road.
These five roads
have become increasingly used as a "short-cut" past the traffic
lights on the main Uxbridge Road. There are severe additional problems
with non-resident parking in the streets and Road Traffic Accidents
(RTAs) caused by non-resident cars. In short the area has become
congested and dangerous, with residents finding it increasingly
difficult to park near their homes.
The Five Road
Forum has successfully organised many meetings and a community newsletter
but the real advancement to the scheme came in August 1999.
On the 4th of
August Broughton Road was temporarily closed to all through traffic
and local children played in the street. At was at this event that
Transport Minister, Lord Whitty, announced that the Government would
be supporting nine pilot Home Zones in England and Wales!
The Broughton
Road event not only got the political wheels turning but raised
the profile of the Home Zones campaign the considerable national
media coverage it received.
