The Methleys
- Leeds This is a large
neighbourhood scheme in a compact area. Housing is mainly terraced,
with a few detached properties on the edge of the proposed Home
Zone. The Streets are in a grid pattern bounded by two main roads,
another residential area and commercial properties. A school is
nearby. Heads Together
are the consultants for this scheme and helped organise a street
party for the terraces in 1996. Their web-site reports: -
"The Methleys is a neighbourhood of some three hundred back-to-back
and terraced houses on the of the inner city in Leeds. Heads Together
worked closely with local residents group, Methleys Neighbourhood
Action and national campaigning group, Transport 2000, to create
a truly memorable event. Eight hundred square metres of turf were
laid Methley Terrace over a weekend in August 1996 to create the
Methleys own "village green". The turf formed the venue for a whole
range of community events and achieved national publicity - everything
from the Sun to the BBC Six o'clock News. It was also part of a
process of creative consultation in the neighbourhood which is now
leading to a permanent community garden at the top of Methley Terrace
and the whole neighbourhood becoming one of country's first Home
Zones; a residential area with priority for pedestrians." Contact www.heads.demon.co.uk/
